Ear Examination

We begin our Ear Health Check with a visual examination of your inner ear, using a state-of-the-art otoscopy system to capture high-definition colour images and video.

Ear Examination: An overview

In the UK we don't prioritise regular checks to our ear and hearing health in the same way as we do with our eyes and teeth. Our annual Ear Health Check aims to change that and it starts with a routine Ear Examination.

Problems within the ear can lead to a number of issues, some more pronounced than others, but all of which can harm your quality of life and lead to difficulties at both home and in the workplace. You may experience earache or a feeling of fullness in your ears, a ringing or buzzing often associated with Tinnitus or a loss of hearing and even balance.

There are several key indicators we are evaluating as part of the Ear Examination that enables us to determine your overall ear and hearing health. These include:

The Outer Ear

The Pinna and Mastoid form parts of the outer ear and we're looking for any signs of infection or other skin issues such as Psoriasis or Eczema

The Ear Canal

Signs of trauma or infection in the ear canal including Osteoma (boney growths), Otitis Externa (outer ear infection or 'swimmers ear') and Otomycosis (fungal infection).

Obstructions & Foreign Bodies

We're also looking for foreign bodies that shouldn't be there, such as hearing aid batteries and bugs, and of course obstructions caused by impacted ear wax.

The Tympanic Membrane

With a clear view of your eardrum we're looking for perforations or retractions of the Tympanic Membrane, Tympanosclerosis (scarring) and Otitis Media (middle ear infection).
The ability to share high-definition images and video with patients really helps them to understand what's going on inside their ears.

Ear Examination: The appointment

Our Ear Examination is elevated by the use of high-definition colour images and video, with access to a network of Audiologists and ENT practitioners and extensive links to our local healthcare system.
Ear Examination - A Visual Assessment

A Visual Assessment

Using the TympaHealth otoscopy system we capture high-definition colour images and video of your ear canal and the Tympanic Membrane.

This provides us with an improved view of your inner ear, allowing us to assess your ears appearance and the expected landmarks in detail.

Importantly, we're able to present these images to you and explain our findings with greater clarity.
Ear Examination - Reviewed by Specialists

Reviewed by Specialists

Our Ear Examination provides exclusive access to a network of audiologists and ENT practitioners.

If any of our findings are outside of what would be considered normal, the images and video we've captured will be forwarded on to this network for specialist review.

This process typically takes a couple of weeks and we will contact you with their observations as soon as they are complete.
Ear Examination - With Local GP Referrals

With Local GP Referrals

As a local healthcare provider for over 15 years we have formed positive links to GP surgeries across Rochdale.

If we feel that you would benefit from a referral to your GP, with your permission, we will contact them on your behalf.

We will provide our completed assessment along with the images captured to assist with your appointment.

What happens next?

Based on the outcome of your Ear Examination there are two options.

Microsuction Ear Wax Removal

If your Ear Examination determines you have ear wax that needs removing we can treat you immediately using a gentle suction system, instead of water syringing, to carefully remove the ear wax without any mess.

Hearing Assessment

If Microsuction Ear Wax Removal isn't required, we complete your Ear Health Check with a 10 minute Hearing Assessment, which provides an overview of your current level of hearing and is vital when assessing any change in your hearing health in 12 months time.
