Microsuction Ear Wax Removal: An overview

Ear wax is created by a secretion called Cerumen, along with Keratin and Sebum and it migrates naturally outwards from the ear canal with the help of ear hairs. The creation of ear wax is an important process and is designed to protect the ear by trapping foreign bodies such as dust and dead skin cells.

In small amounts ear wax helps to keep your ears healthy, but if it builds up inside the ear canal it can cause symptoms such as a blocked feeling or 'fullness' in the ear, earache or Tinnitus.

Some people naturally produce more wax, others may struggle to migrate wax out of their ears because of narrow or bendy ear canals, resulting in a buildup of excess wax. With that in mind it's important to manage the levels of wax present in our ears and take action when necessary.

Before

This patient attended an annual Ear Health Check and was unaware of any specific ear and hearing health issues. Unknown to them, a build-up of ear wax had entirely obscured the view of the Tympanic Membrane (ear drum) preventing a full visual assessment of their ear health.

After

By providing Microsuction Ear Wax Removal in the same appointment and with the excess ear wax removed, the Tympanic Membrane (ear drum) can be seen clearly, with the patient noting an immediate improvement in their hearing and how their ears felt overall.

Microsuction Ear Wax Removal: The appointment

When pairing our Microsuction Ear Wax Removal with the TympaHealth all-in-one otoscopy system we're able to provide comprehensive treatment, complete with before and after images for results you can see as well as hear.

A Modern Treatment

Ahead of your treatment we will ask that you apply an oilve oil spray to both ears on the days leading up to your appointment and we may apply a little ourselves before beginning the procedure.

Microsuction uses a small amount of suction and a 'Zoellner' to gently remove wax from the ear canal. No water is used and we will demonstrate the machine and the level of suction used before starting the proceedure.

That's Gentle & Effective

Paired with the TympaHealth otoscopy system, which provides a clear view of your ear canal, we insert the Zoellner into your ear and carefully remove the softened ear wax using suction alone.

This is a gentle process and takes around 15-20 minutes, though if you feel any discomfort please inform the Ear Care Practitioner. Upon completion patients often report an immediate improvement in how their ears feel.

With Clear Results

With your Microsuction Ear Wax Removal treatment complete we will take a second set of photographs to compare against those taken during your initial Ear Examination, providing a before and after review of your treatment.

On occasion a single session may not be enough to completely clear particuarly compacted ear wax, in this instance we will book an additional appointment for you at no extra cost.

What happens next?

With your treatment complete we look forward to seeing you again for your annual check-up, or sooner if you feel the need.

Post-Treatment Care

After your treatment it's important to keep your ears clear of water for 48 hours. This will be explained in full after your treatment, but typically means using a cap when showering.

Your ongoing ear health is important so for peace of mind we'll send you an email in 12 months time reminding you to book your next Ear Health Check appointment.

Our Ear Health Check appointments are only suitable for adults aged 18 and over and that includes Microsuction Ear Wax Removal. If you are under 18 or are looking for advice or treatment for your child we would recommend contacting your GP directly.

Microsuction Ear Wax Removal should not be painful and if you do experience any pain please inform the Ear Care Practitioner. The procedure can be a little uncomfortable at times, but we limit the time we spend in your ears to 15 - 20 minutes to avoid any unnecessary discomfort during and after your procedure.

Yes; We will ask you upon booking your appointment to apply an olive oil spray to both ears as directed in the days leading up to your appointment. This will help to soften any ear wax that may be present, making it easier to remove and reducing the likelihood of your requiring a second appointment.

If we are unable to remove your ear wax in full on the day we will book an additional appointment for you at no extra charge. If after a second appointment a moderate amount of ear wax is still present we will seek to refer you on to an audiologist or ENT practitioner for further assessment.

After your treatment we advise to keep your ears clear of water for 48 hours to prevent the risk of infection. Post-treatment care will be explained in full after your treatment but this typically means avoiding swimming and using a cap whilst showering.
